Frequently asked questions about hypnotherapy and coaching.

  • Hypnosis is a term used to describe a safe and naturally occurring trance-like state. Hypnosis is a wakeful state where you are both deeply relaxed yet have a heightened level of awareness.

  • Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to achieve a heightened state of awareness, often called a trance. In this state, the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions and changes, helping you break through barriers such as feeling stuck, anxiety, phobias, or unhealthy habits. Hypnotherapy taps into the power of your subconscious mind to address the root causes of issues and create lasting change.

  • No, everyone who wants to be hypnotised can be hypnotised. (The exception is those who have medically diagnosed psychological problems.)

  • No, you are simply deeply relaxed. It’s more like daydreaming. You are aware of what is being said and of any noises going on, but you choose not to fully notice them. And you’ll find that you’re much more interested/focused on your inner thoughts and what the hypnotherapist is saying.

  • Yes, you will have a heightened level of focused awareness. You are in complete control at all times.

  • Brevity is one of the particular benefits of hypnotherapy, with treatment ranging from 1-12 sessions maximum. “Suggestion therapy” is used for more straightforward problems such as relaxation, confidence, nail-biting, slimming,  or exam nerves. Often, 1-3 sessions is sufficient to achieve total release when followed up with self-hypnosis and reinforcement. This is done by listening to a solution-focused hypnotherapy audio recording which I provide free of charge.

More deep-rooted nervous disorders, especially those accompanied by depression or anxiety, require “analytical therapy”. This usually requires up to 8-12 weekly sessions to address the underlying cause of the symptoms.

  • Absolutely not; you are in total control at all times, as all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The idea of someone else being in control of your mind is a common misconception that has come from stage hypnotists/TV hypnotists. In reality, with hypnotherapy the therapist is just facilitating the change in state, but the change itself comes from the client. Therefore, the client can break the state at any time. Think of it like watching an advert. The ad may influence your decision to buy a product, but at the end of the day, no matter how many times you see the advert, you’re still not going to buy dog food if you don’t have a dog!

The ‘operating system’ of your mind can reject a suggestion that isn’t right for you, so you don’t do things against your will and you can emerge from the trance state whenever you choose.

  • No, hypnosis is a proven, safe therapeutic aid.

  • Yes, in fact children accept hypnosis easier than adults and they benefit from safe and effective results.

  • No. You won’t say or do anything you don’t want to. The conscious mind pays attention only when some unusual situation arises that requires it to pay attention. You can be fully alert in nanoseconds.

  • Yes, hypnotherapy is a safe and natural therapeutic practice. It is non-invasive and involves no medications. You remain in full control during the session and can emerge from the hypnotic state at any time. Hypnotherapy is approved by many health organisations as a complementary therapy for a variety of conditions.

  • In a typical session, you will be guided into a deeply relaxed state through verbal cues and visualisation. Once in this state, I’ll work with your subconscious mind to address the issue at hand. Each session is completely personalised based on your needs. Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, and afterwards you will feel deeply relaxed and lighter.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on the individual and the complexity of the issue(s) being addressed. Some clients experience significant changes after just one session, while others may need a series of sessions for deeper issues. We’ll discuss your goals during the initial consultation, and I’ll recommend a plan tailored to your specific needs.

  • “Hypnosis is one of the longest known therapeutic and relaxation approaches that induces positive physical, psychological, and behavioural changes” (Hammond, 2013). Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years, but the term ‘Hypnosis’ itself was the brainchild of British surgeon James Braid in the 1900s, who named it after Hypnos, the Greek God of sleep. Later he realised that hypnotism was not sleep but more of a wakeful state where you are both deeply relaxed and have a focused awareness, but the name hypnosis had already stuck.
